The building that now houses Chris Dyson Architects was built as a pub (the Queens Head named after Queen Charlotte) on the corner of Commercial and Fashion Street circa 1825 as part of the road improvement scheme passed through an act of parliament with the aim of increasing safe passage of goods from the docks to the West End.
Chris Dyson Architects' recent renovations and extension were carried out in 2016 / 17, providing two roof terraces, kitchen amenity and improved circulation and layout for open plan offices. CDA restored the exterior brickwork, tiling and windows of the original building.
There are two primary strands to the practice: the first is historic conservation architecture applying skills in intelligent conservation and sensitive building design to projects, and the second is grand architecture concerned with cultural and commercial commissions.
We enjoy working on challenging projects of all scales, including many historic listed buildings. We pride ourselves on a high degree of attention to detail and a flair for innovative and modern design.
Chris Dyson Architects are opening up their Spitalfields HQ to visitors. Dyson’s work is indelibly associated with Spitalfields, having lived and worked there since 1990, and it’s a place that provides a fitting metaphor for his architecture. As part of the opening, Chris Dyson will give a talk about the practice and how they build 'new into old'.
This event also marks the publication of a new monograph on the practice written by Dominic Bradbury and published by Lund Humphries.
There will be a range of architectural models on display in the conference room (which is not usually open to the public).
