About

Background

The Greenwich Yacht Club was completed in 2000 at a cost of £3.5 million. Designed by Frankl and Luty, and borders Greenwich Millennium Village. It consists of three buildings, the chief one being the Club House. This is situated on an existing jetty, 45m into the Thames and connected to the quay by a footbridge. The building offers uninterrupted views of the River Thames, the O2 and the Thames Barrier. There is also a Landside building for Educational and Social Events. There are also large Construction and Engine Sheds

The Club House

The two-storey building stands high out of the water on a concrete platform supported on stilts. Walkways, balconies and stairs circle the structure. The balusters are galvanised and the see-through sides of the balconies and stairs are of stainless steel wiring. The roof is clad in zinc.

The walls, both inside and out, are of exposed steel and timber cladding. The windows have pine and aluminium framing with an anodised finish. The glazing is heavy-duty, with extra-toughened glass in the bar. Inside, the floors of the main rooms are of natural pirana pine.

The Club House is surrounded by boatsheds, classrooms and a café.
