1-5 Cromwell Place is a terrace of five buildings dating to 1857-60 and probably designed by Charles James Freake, the builder who leased them from the Alexander Estate. The buildings have historical significance as part of an important period of development on the estate and the work of a well-known and highly successful builder. 4 and 5 Cromwell Place have further historic interest as the home to important artists, including the Irish portraitist Sir John Lavery; both these houses were much altered later in the 19th century. Chelsea and Kensington are well known for the artists’ studios constructed in the late 19th century, reflecting the rising social status of artists in this period; these however are relatively early examples with few of the features shared by later studios.

Cromwell Place is a first of its kind global arts destination and Membership organisation, located in five Grade II Listed townhouses in South Kensington. Created as a solution to the changing demands of the art market, the c.£20m development comprises 14 gallery spaces – ranging from 22m2 to 143m2 - plus a variety of working solutions such as offices, meeting rooms, viewing rooms, hot desks, on-site storage facilities, and a club room.
