About

Background

Manor Park Community Garden was first established by residents in 2012. It was transformed into its current incarnation in 2020 when a group of locals successfully bid for a Community Assembly Grant to re-invigorate the garden and by so doing give it a new lease of life by creating an inclusive beautiful outdoor space in which people can feel safe, explore and discover nature and encourage people to mix outside their immediate friendship circles.

The emphasis has been to create an edible garden with fruit trees, berry bushes, herbs, vegetables and some herbaceous flowers. It also aims to be a social focal point where people can arrange to meet friends, run workshops or simply pop in for a moment of peace.

The Garden Story

Manor Park Community Garden was founded on an ethos of inclusion and creating an edible garden, a green space to facilitate community interaction. The £20,000 of capital funding made a massive difference and enabled the space to be completely overhauled, a contaminated soil test to be commissioned, large raised beds to be constructed, soil, plants, pergola and a green-house purchased.

It has run regular free workshops on everything from how to start a garden & green energy; to composting and flower arranging. With an increased number of volunteers, it now aims to keep the garden doors open seven days a week. Between 9.30 and 5.30.

The project to rejuvenate Manor Park Community Garden is one big step towards making Manor Park greener with the hope that it will have a ripple effect on the area as a whole.

Visitor Experience

Come and join us as we take a gentle stroll around the Community Garden and nearby streets of Durham Road Conservation Area to enjoy the many different trees, shrubs, vegetables and flowers that have been grown over the years by local residents. Learn their names and how to grow them or just simply enjoy their beauty. Visit the Community Garden between 12pm and 3pm.

Facilities

Experience the newly created garden with its modern design of raised beds, which forms mini-outdoor rooms that provide ample seating around lush planting, a design solution to get around soil contamination from the space’s earlier usage as a garage.

The garden has a partly covered pergola with outdoor seating as well as a greenhouse full of propagating plants. It is a great place to relax in the sun, enjoy the peace and meet friendly faces.

The Manor Park Community Garden is located on the eastern end of Durham Road Conservation Area, with its attractive period Victorian terraces, large front gardens, trees and flower-rich street planting created and maintained by residents.

The newly created sustainable urban drainage and pedestrianised frontage to the Manor Park Community Garden further increases the greening of the urban realm with some attractive and well-considered planting done by Newham Council’s landscape contractors.

The flowerbed and bicycle hoops running along the garden fence are also inspiring design solutions to curb the practice of pavement parking.

Refreshments will be provided and a variety of seeds to be given to visitors.
