About

Information about the walking tour

This walking tour will explore the history of the nursery movement and the architecture of nurseries today. The tour will include St. Nicholas at Deptford, the Rachel Macmillan Open Air Nursery School and the Albany Theatre.

Each of these sites helps to tell the story of the English nursery - a typology that does not really exist. We will discuss the open air movement and the nursery movement of the early 20th century, the campaigns for twenty-four hour nurseries and creches of the 1970s, makeshift nursery buildings and the current crisis in childcare. There will be opportunities for play along the way if you are bringing small children!
