A typical if narrow end of terrace Victorian house, which has undergone a series of extensions and changes carried out by the architect and owner over a 10 year period. The two main changes open being the basement completed in 2015 and the rear extension and garden completed in 2021.
These types of projects are fairly typical of alterations carried out to traditional terraced houses. When undertaking the design we asked ourselves some simple questions:
What is the relationship between the house and the garden?
What is the relationship between the extension and the rear reception room and how do you get light into this often landlocked room?
How does the atmosphere of the new spaces relate to the rest of the house?
The design we hope responds to these questions in an interesting way with a few particularly important moves; a single large pivot door to the garden and a structural glazed rooflight where the extension hits the existing house.
The design uses a range of natural materials: white washed timber, clay plaster, ash flooring, birch plywood and naturally coloured black pavers. These are put together carefully with attention to the expression of the roof structure of the extension, supported by steel chanels and a central steel column.
